Granny Square Pouch- Hemptique Collab

I love a good pouch, especially one I know will be versatile. These hemp crochet pouches are a quick and easy project to make for small trinkets, or you can size up the pattern for a larger bag!

Granny squares can be a beginner friendly pattern because you work into the big space between the clusters of stitches. It is also a pattern that simply repeats the two row variations over and over: either starting with a cluster or starting with a chain to the first space.

Each row be sure to stitch a cluster of three into the open spaces. Between the cluster you should chain one to create the chain space you’ll stitch into in the next row. The corners are made by doing two clusters from the same chain space and chaining two in between them.

This pattern is made in collaboration with Hemptique who sent me their hemp cord to test out and review. I’m very grateful to share the collection of patterns and my review with you. You can read my full review here, as well as the other patterns from the collection I designed. This set of patterns is also a celebration of pride month! As a queer artist, I’m excited to find materials to express myself, and the colorways I chose from Hemptique reflect my love and pride to be part of the LGBTQIA+ community. I am also grateful to collaborate with a yarn brand to so enthusiastically sign on to me making these in honor of pride month! After I make both granny squares I block them with steam. You could also wet block them if you’d like. Blocking is something I was already doing for the jewelry pieces I was making for my review of these yarns, but I wouldn’t say it's totally necessary.

Side seam

Clip 3 sides of the granny square together.

Row 1: Using the 2.5 mm hook and #10 yarn, hdc around. Hdc 2 in each ch of the bottom corners. Cut yarn.

Top of Bag Details

Stitch around the opening of the bag starting in the seam just finished for the sides.

Rnd 2: ch 2, dc 1 in next hdc, [ch 1, hdc in 2nd hdc from hook, hdc 1 in next] rep [] 16 times, ch 1, sl st to top of beginning ch

Rnd 3: ch 1, sc between first 2 dc, [dc 6 in ch 1 space, sc between next 2 dcs] rep 16 times, sl st into beginning chain

Cut yarn, weave in ends

Chain Tie

Ch 75 (Or desired length)

Weave chain between the ch spaces around the top of the pouch.

Weave in the ends!

Here is your new pouch! I’ve been stitching up quite a few of these lately and I have to say hemp is by far my favorite material to use for them. Hemp bags are durable and won’t get stretched out over time, things that I think are crucial for a good crochet pouch. I also like this pattern because it's easy enough to modify the size by just adding or removing rows of the granny square (and adding or removing scallops along the top accordingly).
