Granny Square Earring Variations- Hemptique Collaboration

This pattern is made in collaboration with Hemptique who sent me their hemp cord to test out and review. I’m very grateful to share the collection of patterns and my review with you. You can read my full review here, as well as the other patterns from the collection I designed. This set of patterns is also a celebration of pride month! As a queer artist, I’m excited to find materials to express myself, and the colorways I chose from Hemptique reflect my love and pride to be part of the LGBTQIA+ community. I am also grateful to collaborate with a yarn brand to so enthusiastically sign on to me making these in honor of pride month! (get 10% off Hemptique yarn you can use my affiliate code “SCARLET10” )

I’ve been making granny square earrings for years at this point. They are a staple in my collection of crochet jewelry, still I do enjoy finding ways to create variations within my world of granny square earrings. This is my first time using hemp yarn for earrings, but definitely won’t be my last. Hemp fiber lends itself so well to jewelry. Particularly these fine hemp cords from Hemptique, with their lace-like quality when stitched up. I’m always looking for fun yarn for my jewelry, especially ones on the lighter side so I can go bigger with my designs, (I’m very into statement jewelry if you couldn’t guess).

General Granny Square INSTRUCTIONS

The granny square is an iconic crochet design. Once you get the hang of it, it’s a relatively easy pattern to do! The square consists of clusters of three stitches (can be sc, dc, hdc, etc.) and ch 1 spaces that you work your clusters into. To make a square and keep your project flat make sure to crochet two clusters in each corner and chain 2 between them! With granny squares you work into the ch spaces rather than the stitches themselves, other than the sl st to connect the rounds.

Here is an pattern for a two round granny square made of hdc clusters.

Create a magic circle

Rnd 1: ch 2 hdc 2 into MC, ch 2 [hdc 3 in MC, ch 2] repeat [] 2 more times, sl st to top of beginning chain

Rnd 2: ch 3, [hdc 3 in ch 2 space, ch 2, hdc 3 in same ch 2 space ch 1] repeat  [] 2 more times, hdc 3 in next ch 2 space, ch 2, hdc 2 in same ch 2 space,  sl st to 2nd stitch of beginning chain.

Cut yarn and weave in ends.

Next, I steamed blocked the granny squares before adding the jump rings and earrings.

So here are the variations I made with the gorgeous Hemptique samples I received.

#20 (1 mm) Hemptique hemp cord, 3.5 mm hook: 1 row of DC plus bead

#10 (.5 mm) Hemptique hemp cord, 2.5 mm hook: 1 row of DC plus bead

#20 (1 mm) Hemptique hemp cord, 3.5 mm hook: 2 rows of DC

#10 (.5 mm) Hemptique hemp cord, 2.5 mm hook: 2 rows of DC

#10 (.5 mm) Hemptique hemp cord, 2.5 mm hook: 1 row of DC and 2 rows of DC

#10 (.5 mm) Hemptique hemp cord, 2.5 mm hook: two 1 row of DC squares

#10 (.5 mm) Hemptique hemp cord, 2.5 mm hook: t 1 row of DC squares

These are definitely on the simpler side of patterns I’ve made, but I think they are cute! Also, with yarn like this the colors do a lot for the design. The stitching doesn’t have to be too complex because the yarn blends into the coloryways so nicely no matter how you stitch it.
